It's Finally Time to Replace Your LG Phone

Note to LG mobile phone users: the update server will be closed soon!

LG stopped producing smartphones in 2021 and focused on other devices. The company will shut down all remaining update servers (as well as LG Bridge) in June. After June 30, 2025, LG phones will no longer receive any updates – it’s time to upgrade.

If you're still using an LG smartphone, whether it's the old LG V50 or the unique LG Wing, it might be time to replace it now. Later this summer, in June, LG will shut down update servers for all its phones, meaning you will no longer be able to receive any security or maintenance updates.

In 2021, LG decided to give up its smartphone business and completely withdraw from the mobile market. Instead, it wants to focus on connected devices such as televisions, robotics, software and electric vehicle components. The smartphone division was closed a few months later, but the company promised three years of timely software updates to all existing (and qualifying) devices. In addition, LG also closed its developer website on December 31, 2021.

Just a simple calculation, the three-year commitment has long expired. If you purchased an LG Wing or LG Velvet in 2020, or any previous LG phone, you may be running an outdated Android version and are missing some security patches. For example, the LG V50 ThinQ is still using Android 12, while LG Wing received the Android 13 update in 2023. Have you seen the problem? These phones are already very outdated and can be vulnerable to multiple vulnerabilities.

It's Finally Time to Replace Your LG Phone Related##### Your Android device is too old to receive updates, what should I do?

Here is what it means that your phone is no longer supported.

For now, we are well past LG’s three-year deadline, which is why the company recently announced it would ban all of its LG phones’ update servers. This means that any phone still in use will no longer be able to access software updates.

As Android Authority points out, LG will officially shut down all its existing update servers on June 30, 2025. Users will no longer be able to get over-the-air updates from any phones from LG, nor can they access software updates through the LG Bridge PC application. Essentially, this is the end.

Therefore, if you are still using an old LG smartphone as your everyday device, we strongly recommend upgrading to new, modern and newer devices. For those who repurpose older LG phones for other uses, such as security cameras, it's better to check for updates when you still have the chance. I suspect that there aren't many users who still use LG phones, but if there are any, buy a new Pixel 9a, Galaxy S25 Plus, or one of the best Android phones. You will be glad you did it.

It's inevitable, and we all know it will come eventually. That said, LG does occasionally release some truly amazing phones. While some phones are on my list of worst Android phones, others are works of art, such as the stunning LG Wing or the G4 made of leather. I'm sorry to see them exit the market, and now there is less competition in the mobile space than ever before.
