How to stop your iPhone or iPad from suggesting text effects in Messages

My 20-year-old disliked iOS's automatic "Ripple" text effect, one of the arguably unnecessary Text Effects introduced in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 Sequoia. While I only saw suggestions in the QuickType bar, my child experienced unwanted automatic insertion—a complaint echoed in online forums.

Fortunately, this can be disabled on iOS and iPadOS. There's no dedicated "Disable Text Effects" switch. Instead, navigate to Settings > General > Keyboards, scroll down to All Keyboards, and disable Predictive Text. This removes all contextual typing suggestions, but unfortunately, it doesn't disable the often-inaccurate Auto-Correction (which can be turned off separately in the same section).

Apple's imposition of unexpected features, like these unwelcome text effects, feels increasingly common. A simple option to prevent the suggestion or insertion of these largely unused Text Effects would be a welcome improvement, allowing users to opt-in rather than being forced to use them.
