New Google Leak Reveals Subscription Changes For Gemini AI
Google's Gemini Advanced: New Subscription Tiers on the Horizon
Currently, accessing Gemini Advanced requires a $19.99/month Google One AI Premium plan. However, an Android Authority report hints at upcoming changes. Code within the latest Google Photos app reveals two potential new subscription tiers: "Premium Plus AI" and "Premium AI Pro."
These additions would join the existing "Premium AI" and other non-AI options, including the recently introduced "Lite" tier. While details on pricing and features remain scarce – and names are subject to change – it's anticipated that "Premium Plus AI" and "Premium AI Pro" will surpass the current "Premium" offering, likely at a higher price point.
Google has separately announced a discounted annual Google One AI Premium option via X (formerly Twitter). This is expected to remain distinct from the new tiers, as Google typically maintains consistent naming for monthly and annual plans.
The Significance of New Tiers
Expanding subscription options provides Google with greater flexibility in pricing and feature delivery. The current Google One AI Premium package includes 2TB storage, Gemini integration in Gmail and Docs, NotebookLM Plus, and enhanced Google Photos AI features. New tiers could introduce additional features or modify existing ones.
Potential additions include increased limits for the recently added Veo 2 AI video generation tool (currently restricted to short clips), higher video resolutions, or longer video durations. This also presents a significant sales opportunity, as premium smartphones often include free Google One AI Premium subscriptions. Higher-tier options allow Google to upsell to these users.
Further details are anticipated at Google I/O next month.
Speculation on New Tier Offerings
While specifics are unknown, potential upgrades for the "Premium Plus AI" and "AI Premium Pro" tiers could include:
- Enhanced AI-generated image and video quality (higher resolution, longer durations).
- Reduced usage limits.
- Expanded context windows for processing larger files and videos.
- Entirely new features and more powerful models.
Alternatively, the new tiers might simply rebrand existing higher-capacity Google One plans (5TB, 10TB, 20TB), which currently lack AI branding despite including Gemini Advanced.
Annual Subscriptions: Proceed with Caution
Currently, the Google One Premium 5TB plan offers a discounted annual Gemini Advanced subscription. However, given the rapid evolution of AI and the emergence of competitive services (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude), a monthly subscription is recommended. This avoids potential lock-in to a service that may become less attractive over time. Google also has a history of making premium features free eventually.
