One UI 7 update restart: Samsung restores flagship model upgrade after fixing major bugs

Samsung has resumed the One UI 7 update push for its 2024 flagship smartphone, after the update was suspended due to a major bug. Globally, users of the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 should now receive update prompts in the next few days.

This time, the One UI 7 update is full of twists and turns. Samsung has been known for its rapid release of major updates to One UI, but this year it has experienced serious problems, resulting in most Samsung phones remaining on Android 14 systems in mid-April.

The initial update kicked off on April 7, after numerous delays, with many other brands of smartphones getting Android 15 updates ahead of Samsung. The Galaxy S25 series, as well as most of Samsung's new 2025 phones, are pre-installed with One UI 7, so the challenge is to make it work properly on older models. However, the update was abruptly aborted after South Korean users reported a serious bug - an early user described an issue where the device could not be unlocked after installing the One UI 7 update, causing the phone to be unusable until the fix was launched.

Samsung did not publicly acknowledge the issue, but did pause the update and said the update plan was "updated to ensure the best user experience". Now, given that the update has started pushing again, this issue should have been fixed. However, to be on the safe side, if you are eligible for an update, it is recommended that you still wait a few more weeks before installing the update. This update process is very tortuous, and just in case, the possibility of more problems will occur cannot be ruled out.

The first beta of One UI 7 was released last December, but no one could have expected such a confusion in the future except for the abnormal delay in beta release (Android 15 was first released to AOSP in September 2024). Pushing One UI 7 from now on, just one month away from the final release of Android 16 — although to be fair, Google is trying to adjust its update schedule, so this time Android 16 launch is much earlier than Android 15.

Samsung finally confirmed the exact release date and over a dozen devices that will get the Android 15 update first.

Samsung has been good at launching updates in the past few years. It's worth mentioning that Samsung is looking to get back on track with the Android 16 update — the company has been testing internally that will eventually become One UI 8, so we may see the first beta coming soon after the Android 16 final update is released.

Meanwhile, if you have a qualifying phone, be aware of upcoming device updates. If the update already shows you can download it, please remember me - wait a few days to see if there are any serious bugs. The update will eventually be rolled out to older phones, although we haven't heard much about it yet.
