How to use Google Chrome Dark Mode

Apr 24, 2025 am 11:02 AM

Unfortunately, Chrome itself doesn't offer real dark mode. This sounds a bit weird, but Google does not really offer this option to users in Chrome.

How to enable Chrome Dark Mode

While there are some themes that will get you close to Chrome's dark mode, there is no official option that is explicitly marked as dark mode. To enable Chrome dark mode on your computer, some additional steps are required, such as changing the display settings of your macOS system, switching logos, installing Chrome extensions, or browsing in incognito mode.

Here are three ways to switch to Chrome's dark mode:

Method 1: Enable dark mode through system preference settings

Google Chrome follows Mac system preferences, so switching the entire system to dark mode will make Chrome slightly darker. The operation steps are as follows:

  1. Click the Apple icon in the Mac menu bar.
  2. Select System Preferences.
  3. Select General.
  4. Under the Appearance tab, select Dark color.

This will darken your entire macOS system and make Chrome appear in a darker tone – but this will only work after you change the Chrome theme. In Chrome, click Customize in the lower right corner of Google.com homepage and select No theme. If you set the theme, Chrome's borders will still be dark, but the entire window won't.

The management model is troublesome. Knowing how to turn off dark mode in Chrome is also practical, but it is equally cumbersome to operate. We also recommend using the One Switch for Mac app, which can quickly and easily manage dark mode (and other settings) of your Mac. The One Switch works better when you need to turn off Chrome's dark mode settings (and already enable Chrome's dark mode using system settings).

The One Switch resides in your menu bar and offers simple switches to control dark mode, Bluetooth headset pairing, night shift mode, and quick desktop cleaning (hiding and showing files and folders). For those who prefer Chrome dark mode but don't want to keep the entire system dark at all times, the One Switch is very useful. You can switch dark mode in One Switch, use Chrome, and then switch back to bright mode when you're done.

Method 2: Use Chrome logo to set dark mode

In Chrome, there are some flags (actually settings) that can turn many features on or off. One of the logos is "force web content to use dark mode", which is very practical. In Chrome, enter chrome://flags in the URL field and press Enter. Search for "dark" to find the flag and switch it to "Enabled". Then restart Chrome and the entire web page will become dark. If you ever wondered if Chrome has dark mode, the answer is that it can be achieved through the logo. marvelous!

Method 3: Use Chrome extension

Chrome extensions are popular and cover almost all kinds of network use cases you can think of. There are a lot of excellent Chrome extensions that can switch dark mode, but we don't always like to use dark mode Chrome extensions because they can be a way for hackers to run code without their knowledge.

One way to manage extensions is to use CleanMyMac X, which we really like. It has a lot of features to keep your Mac in the best shape, including managing extensions. We prefer to use CleanMyMac X because it completely removes extensions; sometimes, extensions may be written to computer system memory, and deleting extensions through Chrome does not always remove all junk files left by those extensions.

With CleanMyMac X, manage extensions while also managing all related files or folders. Using it ensures that when you delete an extension, it is completely cleared.

Method 4: Use Invisible Mode as an alternative to Chrome Dark Mode

Using Incognito mode in Chrome is a way to quickly view dark mode, but remember that Incognito mode is really just a way to browse web pages without showing any Chrome history. It's cumbersome to use it every time. You have to go to Chrome > Files > New Invisibility Window, or use the keyboard shortcut command-shift-N . This is a bit troublesome and is not recommended for daily use.

How to use Google Chrome Dark Mode

Dark mode, night mode, system settings, system preferences, always on, sometimes on – this can be confusing!

That's the main reason we recommend using the One Switch. It quickly switches settings like dark mode and allows you to easily switch back and forth. Many users prefer dark mode, but sometimes want to switch back. One Switch makes it all a lot easier!

We also like to use CleanMyMac X to manage extensions, whether in dark mode or other extensions. Chrome is much more powerful when you use extensions, but managing them can be tedious. Let CleanMyMac X do this for you!

Both One Switch and CleanMyMac X are available for free during Setapp’s seven-day free trial, Setapp is the best Mac app suite in the world. In addition to these two applications, you can also access the entire directory of Setapp with unlimited access; dozens of applications have a wide range of uses, and we are sure you will enjoy it.
