Google Search now uses Speculation Rules API to make search faster
Chrome browser improves Google search speed: use the Speculation Rules API to speed up search results
Google announced that Chrome browser users will be able to search faster when using Google search. This improvement is driven by the utilization of the Speculation Rules API, which accelerates the overall search experience by prefetching search results.
"Google Search has always leveraged the Speculation Rules API to speed up navigation from search results pages to result links, and we have used some API features that may attract the interest of other website owners," Google wrote in the Chrome Developer Blog.
Specific details: Google will prefetch the first two search results to speed up the search. Google says this is done by using requires
configuration to ensure that prefetching uses a private prefetch proxy in Chrome and uses referrer_policy
setting to ensure that the details encoded in the search page URL are not sent to the site via the referer HTTP header.
Results: Google wrote that they “see significant improvements in Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), particularly in the first two results:
- Chrome for Android: Google search clicks reduced LCP by 67 milliseconds.
- Chrome on desktop: LCP has also received similar improvements, reducing it by 58.6 milliseconds.
In addition to the first two results, Google has also announced the following improvements:
- Chrome on the desktop reduces First Contentful Paint (FCP) from Google Search navigation by 7.6ms and LCP by 9.5ms (A/B tests show).
- These improvements are smaller compared to the 58.6 millisecond improvements of the first two results, but this is not surprising because they are not actively prefetched.
Why we focus: A faster Google experience may bring more users, more traffic, and ultimately more satisfied and more conversions. But it depends on how visibility your website is in Google search.
