CSS-Tricks Chronicles XLIII
It's been a while since my last update (September 2024!), but exciting things have been happening at CSS-Tricks. Let's dive into the highlights.
Almanac Expansion
My last 2024 post prioritized expanding the Almanac. We revamped it with new sections for CSS selectors, at-rules, and functions, but they were initially sparse. Since the start of 2025, we've added 21 new Almanac entries – a collaborative effort between our team and the community! These additions include:
animation-timeline
interpolate-size
overlay
@charset
@counter-style
@import
@keyframes
@namespace
@page
@view-transition
attr()
calc-size()
counter()
counters()
hsl()
lab()
lch()
light-dark()
oklch()
rgb()
symbols()
And that's not all! We're currently working on fourteen more. While we don't anticipate maintaining this pace all year (each entry requires significant effort), it's a testament to our commitment. Remember, the Almanac isn't our sole focus; we're dedicated to delivering fresh articles and tutorials.
Podcast and Event Highlights
While I'm not known for being overly social, I've enjoyed some recent podcast and event appearances:
- I hosted Smashing Meets Accessibility, a mini-conference focusing on WCAG, best practices, and personal experiences with accessibility.
- I also hosted Smashing Meets CSS, featuring Adam Argyle, Julia Micene, and Miriam Suzanne, who delivered insightful presentations on modern CSS.
- I co-host a new podcast with Brad Frost, Open Up, where we discuss less-talked-about aspects of web design and development, including challenging topics like layoffs and rediscovering professional purpose.
- I was a guest on the Mental Health in Tech podcast, discussing the challenges of rapid technological advancements.
New Counter Styling Guide
Unexpectedly, a comprehensive guide on styling CSS counters became a priority. Juan Diego Rodriguez highlighted its complexity, encompassing design, accessibility, and semantics. The guide explores the numerous CSS tools, including the counter()
and counters()
functions (newly documented in the Almanac). This is our first new guide of 2025, and I'm hopeful for another before year's end.

I had someone write in with this very legit question. Lea just blogged about how you can get valid CSS properties themselves from the browser. That's like this.

The other day, I spotted this particularly lovely bit from Corey Ginnivan’s website where a collection of cards stack on top of one another as you scroll.

I'd say "website" fits better than "mobile app" but I like this framing from Max Lynch:
