It's pretty cool how Netlify CMS works with any flat file site generator

Initially, Netlify CMS seemed like a "someday" project. However, I quickly realized its immediate value: a content management UI seamlessly integrated with any static site generator using flat files. Imagine building a site with Markdown files using Gatsby, Jekyll, Hugo, or similar. Netlify CMS empowers you (and authorized users) to create and edit these Markdown files without needing a code editor or Git expertise. It's a browser-based app handling file manipulation and Git interactions behind the scenes.

Our conferences website, built with 11ty and Nunjucks, serves as a perfect example. While Git Pull Requests worked well, Netlify CMS offers unparalleled simplicity. The entire CMS integration involved just two files—a remarkably small React app completely configurable via a single file.

The result? A custom UI for managing conference details directly on the production site. Netlify CMS doesn't directly alter production HTML; instead, it mirrors the workflow of directly editing files and committing via Git.

Authentication and Git Integration

Using Netlify CMS on a production site necessitates authentication. Netlify Identity simplifies this process; simply enable it in your Netlify settings. The Git integration leverages Git Gateway, handling the connection between your site and Git repository. Content creation/editing directly updates Markdown files (including images) within the Git repository. This streamlined approach is remarkably efficient.

The ease of use and minimal integration made Netlify CMS a perfect addition to our site.
