What the Web Needs Now (and how ARTIFACT is here for it)

The ARTIFACT Conference (Austin, TX, September 30th - October 1st, 2019) is back! This intimate gathering of web designers and developers focuses on building inclusive and high-performing websites. Originally launched in 2013 to tackle the challenges of responsive design, ARTIFACT returns with a renewed focus on creating a web experience for everyone.

The initial ARTIFACT conferences addressed the rapid shift to mobile-first design. Now, having largely overcome the initial hurdles of responsive design, the focus has evolved. The conference will explore crucial areas such as accessibility, performance optimization, and leveraging modern browser capabilities to simplify development.

A More Inclusive Web

ARTIFACT 2019 emphasizes inclusive design, encompassing accessibility, diversity, and internationalization. Leading experts will share insights on creating user experiences that cater to diverse communities and address cognitive biases. Speakers include Benjamin Evans (Airbnb), Elle Waters (accessibility expert), and David Dylan Thomas (cognitive bias).

Enhanced Performance and Efficiency

Website performance remains a key concern. Tim Kadlec will delve into the relationship between performance and inclusion, offering practical coding examples. Jason Grigsby will explore the performance benefits of Progressive Web Apps. Many sessions will implicitly address performance optimization strategies.

Harnessing Modern Browser Features

Modern browsers offer powerful built-in features, enabling leaner, more efficient code. Chris Ferdinandi will demonstrate "Lean Web Development," showcasing how to utilize native browser functionalities to minimize the need for extensive frameworks. Dave Rupert will discuss discarding outdated workarounds and embracing modern best practices.

Workflow and Process Innovation

The ever-evolving web development landscape necessitates adaptable workflows. ARTIFACT 2019 will feature sessions on design system implementation (Kim Williams, Dan Mall, Brad Frost), CSS Grid layout design (Jen Simmons), JAMstack advantages (Divya Sasidharan), and the future of web animation (Sarah Drasner). Workshops on October 2nd will further explore designer-developer collaboration and advanced animation techniques.

ARTIFACT 2019 aims to foster a community committed to user-centric web design and development. The conference will be held in Austin, TX from September 30th to October 1st, 2019, with workshops on October 2nd. Group discounts are available. And yes, there will be milkshakes!
