Windows 11 Snipping Tool Gains Powerful New OCR Feature: Say Goodbye to Manual Text Selection!

Windows 11's Snipping Tool just received a major upgrade, adding Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capabilities. This allows users to select text from virtually any on-screen element, including applications, games, and photos, even those that don't normally support text selection. No need for specialized software or a high-end PC – this feature is built right in!

This is similar to the OCR in the Windows 11 Photos app, but with a crucial difference: Snipping Tool integration eliminates the extra steps of capturing and saving a screenshot before text selection. It’s faster and more efficient. The tool even offers an "Automatically copy all text" option for ultimate convenience.

Microsoft's PowerToys suite also recently received an update, including improved Advanced Paste features and a refreshed interface. The image-to-text functionality is incredibly useful for various tasks, from digitizing old documents and translating text to creating invoices and taking notes.

This new text selection capability mirrors similar features found in other operating systems, but Windows' implementation may be the most streamlined. iOS and iPadOS offer text selection from images within the Photos app, while macOS provides a similar function in Preview. Google Pixel phones allow text copying from apps via the Recents screen without screenshots, a feature also present on some other Android devices.

Microsoft's blog post details the process: select a region to scan, manually select text to copy, or use the "Copy all text" button for quick copying. Additional options include removing line breaks or enabling automatic text copying upon selection.

The Windows taskbar design has remained largely unchanged since Windows 7. While customization options existed in previous versions, Windows 11's taskbar was initially quite inflexible. However, improvements are finally being rolled out.

This OCR feature is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels (Snipping Tool version 11.2503.27.0). A wider release to all Windows 11 users is expected after bug fixes. Note that this feature is not planned for Windows 10, whose mainstream support ends October 14, 2025.
