'Macross Zero' Blu-Ray Review: Absolutely Worth The Wait

A long-awaited Western release! While Macross Plus enjoyed a Western release decades ago, many classic Macross series remained unavailable until recently. Macross Zero, originally released in 2002, is one such title, finally receiving a Blu-ray release.

Serving as a prequel to the original Macross TV series, Macross Zero delves into the previously unexplored Unification Wars. It reveals the context of these wars, highlighting the technological advancements brought by the Macross spaceship crash and the resulting power struggles. The Macross wasn't the only Protoculture relic, however, and a mysterious Bird Human fuels a new conflict.

Unlike other modern Macross anime like Macross Plus, Macross Zero innovatively blends 2D character animation with textured 3D mecha models. Gonzo's expertise, evident in their 2002 Yukikaze anime, set a high bar, which Macross Zero successfully met. The series is a landmark achievement in modern animation, seamlessly integrating complex transforming mecha into a contemporary anime setting.

The Blu-ray release is visually and aurally stunning. Kuniaki Haishima's unique score, atypical for Macross at the time, further enhances the experience. The mecha battles are spectacular, though some variable fighters might seem overpowered for a prequel – a minor quibble easily forgiven for the overall impact.

The Blu-ray box set includes a comprehensive 128-page booklet packed with interviews and background information. This release feels almost surreal, given the past complexities of Macross international licensing.

While Macross Plus boasts a dynamic plot, Macross Zero offers a more nuanced, spiritual approach, solidifying the Macross saga's thematic foundation. The series remains remarkably engaging, and its official Western release is truly cause for celebration.
