The First 'White Lotus' Spin-Off Should Definitely Happen After Season 3
The unresolved Ratliff storyline in The White Lotus season three presents a compelling opportunity for a spin-off. Timothy Ratliff's return to the US, facing FBI investigation for financial crimes and grappling with suicidal ideation, leaves a significant narrative gap. His near-fatal poisoning of his son, Lochlan, who miraculously survives, creates a potent dramatic tension that remains unexplored.
The show abruptly ends without depicting the aftermath of this crisis. The family's discovery of Timothy's actions only after a week's phone-free vacation feels rushed. A spin-off focusing on the Ratliffs' adjustment to life back in the US, dealing with the consequences of Timothy's actions and their newfound "poverty," would be compelling. This concept echoes Schitt's Creek, albeit with a darker, White Lotus-esque tone.
This spin-off would ideally feature the return of Victoria and Saxon Ratliff, played by Parker Posey and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Posey's comedic performance was a highlight of a relatively less humorous season, and Schwarzenegger's character arc was notably well-developed.
However, the likelihood of this spin-off is low. Mike White's sole authorship and direction of each White Lotus episode means either relinquishing creative control or delaying the already-approved fourth season. While White has previously expressed openness to a Tanya-centric prequel, that idea didn't materialize. Nevertheless, his past willingness to consider spin-offs suggests the Ratliff family's story might still be a possibility.
