Android Auto Update Brings Angry Birds and Gemini to Your Car
Android Auto 14.1: Games Arrive, Gemini Replaces Google Assistant
The latest Android Auto update, version 14.1, brings exciting new features: in-car game support and the gradual rollout of Google's Gemini AI, replacing the familiar Google Assistant.
While game support was in beta for a while, it's now officially available on more vehicles with the 14.1 update. This follows Google's January announcement to expand app and game availability on its automotive platforms, initially focusing on Android Automotive.
Gaming on the Go (While Parked!)
Over 70 apps and games launched for Android Automotive in February, and a selection is now appearing on Android Auto-enabled infotainment systems. Currently, when the vehicle is safely parked, you can enjoy titles such as Angry Birds 2, Beach Buggy Racing, Candy Crush Soda Saga, and Farm Heroes Saga. Unlike previous sideloading methods, these games now integrate natively.
To play, install your chosen game on your phone and ensure you have Android Auto 14.1 or later. The games should then appear on your in-car display after launching Android Auto.
This is just the beginning; expect a wider range of games and apps in the coming months.
Gemini Takes the Wheel (Eventually)
Another significant change in the 14.1 update is the replacement of the Google Assistant microphone button with Gemini. This reflects Google's ongoing transition from Google Assistant to its newer Gemini AI. While the shift was expected, its rapid implementation in vehicles is noteworthy. This transition will eventually encompass all Google platforms.
Furthermore, the update addresses previously reported connectivity issues and bugs. Check for updates on your phone and experience the new features firsthand.
