My previous article, "Custom Properties as State," explored the theoretical possibility of UI frameworks like React and Vue automatically syncing their managed state with CSS Custom Properties. This would allow direct state access within CSS.
I suggested a
useStateWithCustomProperties
hook to achieve this. A great idea!
Andrew Bloyce took up this challenge, and the resulting hook works exactly as envisioned. It returns a component acting as a Custom Property boundary; any state passed to it is mapped to custom properties. A basic example demonstrates its functionality.
This is already a clever and useful tool, but its potential is significantly amplified by the prospect of higher-level custom properties. Imagine changing a single custom property to trigger a cascade of style changes across an entire block—similar to the power and convenience of media queries.
