The First Berserker: Khazan - Complete Guide To Skill Points
The First Berserker: Khazan has a surprising amount of systems and mechanics at play that can substantially change the dynamic of what you'd typically expect from a soulslike while still offering that white-knuckled gameplay and exhilarating encounters that force you to utilize everything at your disposal to emerge victorious.
Amongst these systems are Skills that enable you to use potent abilities designed specifically for your weapon of choice, allowing you to take your combat prowess to the next level. However, Skills are handled a bit differently than you may expect, which can be a bit confusing early on!
How To Earn Skill Points
Earning Skill Points in The First Berserker: Khazan is the simplest aspect of the system, as you just have to play the game. Landing perfect parries, using Skills, and defeating enemies will gradually fill your Master Level gauge found within the upper right-hand corner of the Skill Tree page.
But, while you can track your progress, you will sometimes run into instances where you can no longer earn Skill Points until after you clear a specific Main Mission, where you will likely run into some troubles. While you can still accrue Lacrima and increase your Main Level and Stats, you can no longer raise your Mastery Level and unlock new Skills until you complete the mission.
This Mastery Level Cap acts as a way to keep you within the intended Skill-range of the Main Mission, making it so you can't get too overpowered before squaring off against them. However, after you defeat the area's Boss, the Mastery Level Cap will be raised, and you can begin earning more Skill Points until you meet the next Level Cap!
Level Cap Breakdown
Mastery Level Cap |
Mission Needed To Clear |
---|---|
Mastery Level 12 | Trials of the Frozen Mountain |
Mastery Level 16 | Forgotten Temple |
Mastery Level 20 | First Act of Revenge |
Mastery Level 24 | Strange Stench |
Mastery Level 28 | Traitor Revealed |
Mastery Level 32 | Veiled Knives |
More Mastery Levels will be added to the table soon! |
Spending Skill Points
After reaching a new Mastery Level, you will be rewarded with one Skill Point, allowing you to visit the Skill Tree and spend it on any of the Skills available. There are four different tabs available: Dual Wield, Greatsword, Spear, and Common. While the weapon-based Skills will only work for those specific weapons, the Common tab is universal Skills and can be used regardless of the weapon.
Each Skill will cost one Skill Point, with some Skills able to be further upgraded with more Skill Points if you want to unlock different attributes or buff their potency. While we strongly recommend sticking to one weapon type and only using its Skill Tree and the Common one, you can dip your toe into multiple Skill Trees if you plan to use multiple weapons.
Don't sleep on the Common Skills either, has they have tremendous potential and can increase your proficiency with things such as Reflection, your Javelin, Counterattack, and much more. While the weapon-focused Skills will have a much substantial impact overall, your Common Skills can be just as useful, so don't overlook them when spending your Skill Points!
Resetting Skill Points
Fortunately, resetting Skill Points is hassle-free and available right from the jump, allowing you to forget specific Skills or just reset the entire page to get every Skill Point you have spent back to place elsewhere. This is excellent for anyone wanting to swap to a different weapon, as you can grab your points back from the Spear Tree and place them all in the Greatsword Tree.
The great news here is that it also costs you nothing to forget or reset your Skills. To do this, open your Skill Tree, hover over the Skill you want to forget and press Triangle/Y to 'Unlearn' that specific Skill. If you want to reset the entire page, clicking in the Left Analog Stick will bring up a confirmation menu; selecting 'OK' will 'Reset All' Skill Points you spent on that specific page back to you.
We strongly recommend using this feature often, even if you will continue using your current weapon type. The more you increase your Mastery Level, the more Skills become available, which may cause you to want to go down a different path. And, with this feature, you can try it out without worrying about wasting resources or anything of the sort!
