After 5 Years, This Final Fantasy Game Is Shutting Down, Saddening Long-Time Players
The popular mobile game, War of the Visions: FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, is ending its global service after a five-year run. Developed by Square Enix and Gumi, this free-to-play, turn-based tactical RPG featured numerous collaborations with mainline Final Fantasy titles, a fully voiced storyline, and engaging multiplayer content, fostering a dedicated community.
Square Enix announced the game's closure on May 29th, 2025, with in-app purchases already disabled. A March 26th livestream promised a detailed roadmap for the game's remaining lifespan.
A Legacy of Content and Community
Launched in Japan in November 2019 and globally in March 2020, War of the Visions quickly gained traction, initially with a Final Fantasy XIV collaboration featuring Y'shtola and Thancred. Subsequent collaborations with Final Fantasy Tactics (a game whose combat system heavily influenced War of the Visions) and other titles like Persona 5, NieR: Automata, and Dragon Quest Tact, further solidified its appeal. The game also boasted a rich, fully voiced narrative punctuated by cinematic cutscenes and regular updates.
The shutdown announcement has disappointed many players, some hoping for an offline version to preserve the game's story content. One player expressed sadness over the loss of original characters, highlighting the emotional connection forged within the game's community.
A Troubling Trend for Final Fantasy Mobile Games
War of the Visions' demise follows a pattern of recent closures in Square Enix's Final Fantasy mobile game portfolio. The popular Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia lasted six years before shutting down, while Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier had an even shorter lifespan, lasting only a year. The global service for FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS also ended in 2024. While Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis launched in late 2023, the trend suggests challenges for Square Enix in maintaining long-term success in the mobile Final Fantasy market.
The War of the Visions shutdown, foreshadowed by a lack of updates and the removal of in-game purchases, has left players concerned. The upcoming livestream is eagerly anticipated, offering a chance for developers to address player concerns and provide a satisfying conclusion to the game's narrative.
