Main desktop environment changes
KDE Plasma 6 is used by default
ROME 24.07 uses KDE Plasma 6 as the desktop environment by default, providing a modern and intuitive user experience.
Versions and variants
In addition to the default Plasma 6 desktop, users can use other versions, including LXQt 2.0.0 (Qt6) and GNOME 46.3 .
A special ROME Plasma6 Wayland ISO version is also provided, but it should be noted that for most users, Wayland is not yet mature enough to replace X11 as the default desktop environment.
Users should note that the Wayland ISO image may not run in VirtualBox and will usually boot to a black screen. However, it works well in most hardware and QEmu using KVM .
Enhanced MS Windows Compatibility
OpenMandriva now provides improved options for running Windows applications.
The standard Wine Windows emulator is still available. Proton and Proton-experimental (usually used for Windows games in Steam) are now packages for OpenMandriva. This is the first time Proton is available outside of Steam without non-free code.
OM-Welcome, a centralized configuration tool
OM-Welcome , this new startup and configuration tool, combines the functions of oma-welcome and om-control-center , provides a convenient and integrated starting point for configuring the system and installing the software.
