5 ways to translate websites on your phone
Beyond the English-speaking internet lies a world of information. Encountering a website in an unfamiliar language is common. Instead of turning away, leverage your mobile browser's translation capabilities. While not perfect, these tools provide a good understanding of content.
The translation process varies depending on your browser. Most browsers assume your phone's system language (accessible via System > Languages & input on Android, and General > Language & Region on iOS) is your preferred language.
Google Chrome:
Chrome, with its built-in translation engine, offers a seamless experience. Upon opening a foreign-language website, a translation prompt appears at the bottom (Android) or top (iOS). Tap English (Android) or Translate (iOS) to begin. Translation persists until disabled. To revert to the original language on Android, tap the translation bar; on iOS, tap the Google Translate icon (left of the address bar) and select Show Original. Manage translation settings via the three dots (Android) or cog icon (iOS) in the translation pop-up, or through Settings > Languages in Chrome's main menu.
Microsoft Edge:
Edge also boasts integrated translation. A translation offer appears at the bottom (Android) or top (iOS) when you open a non-native language website. Accepting initiates translation, which remains active within the site. To adjust settings (automatic translation, site exclusions, etc.), use the three dots (Android) or cog icon (iOS) on the overlay. iOS users may encounter an extra step before translation. To revert to the original language, reload the page and decline translation. Manage translation preferences via Settings > General > Microsoft Translator in Edge's settings.
Apple Safari:
Safari, iOS's default browser, handles translations efficiently. On a non-default language website, tap the "AA" icon (left of the address bar) and select Translate to English. Confirm translation by tapping Enable Translation (allowing Apple to process the text). Safari remembers translated sites. Translation remains active within the site; to view the original, tap the translation icon and select View Original.
Other Browsers:
Many browsers offer built-in translation (e.g., Brave), while others don't (e.g., Opera). Your phone's operating system also provides text translation. While less comprehensive than page translation, it's useful for smaller text blocks.
On Android, install the Google Translate app. Enable Tap to Translate in Settings. Select text, and the Translate option appears. On iOS, select text; the Translate option should appear (if not, tap the right arrow). Confirm Apple's text analysis to view the translation. You can then have the translation read aloud or copied.
