A beginner’s guide to using Android

Welcome to the Android world! It is full of customization and endless possibilities. If you have been using Apple devices before, you may be unfamiliar with some basic operations on Android, which is normal.

Android system difference tips: It should be noted that Android is an open source operating system. Although Google has developed a standard Android system (such as the one used on Pixel phones), individual mobile phone manufacturers can modify it according to their preferences. Therefore, there may be differences in Android versions of different manufacturers. If you find that some of the instructions in this article do not apply to your device, or the path is different, this is likely the reason.

Android screenshot and screen recording method:

Screenshots are very simple: Press the Power keys and volume reduction keys at the same time. After the screenshot is finished, thumbnails and some options will be displayed in the lower left corner of the screen, including sharing, editing (cropping and doodling), and taking longer screenshots (similar to long images). Screenshots will be automatically saved to the "Screenshots" folder of Google Photos (open Google Photos, click "Library" in the lower right corner, and then find the "Screenshots" folder).

The screen recording function has only become a standard feature in Android 12 and above, but some manufacturers (such as Samsung and Xiaomi) have already supported it. Typically, the screen recording function is located in the Quick Settings menu (swipe three fingers down from the top of the screen to open). If the screen recording button is not found, you can swipe the menu left to see more tools, or click the pencil icon to add button. Before starting screen recording, you can choose whether to include audio (and audio sources) and whether to display screen touch. After clicking "Start", a countdown will be displayed at the top of the screen, and recording will begin after the countdown is over. To stop recording, just swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification menu and click "Stop" in the recording item. The recorded video will also be saved to Google Photos.

Android number blocking method:

It is simple to block unwanted numbers, similar to the operation of an iPhone. If you are using the Google Phone app, open the app, find the number you want to block, click it, and select "History". In the upper right corner of the screen, click the three-dot menu and select "Block". If you are using the phone application owned by the mobile phone manufacturer, the operation path may be slightly different. You can also download the Google Phone app from the Play Store to replace the original app.

Android application delete method:

Find the app icon you want to delete (probably in the home screen or in the app drawer), hold the icon until the phone vibrates, and then drag the icon. You can drag the icon to rearrange the position, or click one of the two buttons that appear at the top to delete it. The Remove button removes the icon from the home screen, but the app is still accessible through the app drawer. The "Uninstall" button will completely delete the app. Before deleting the application, you will be prompted to confirm.

Android hidden application method:

The standard Android system does not have built-in hidden application features, but some manufacturers (such as Samsung and OnePlus) provide this feature. If you are using a Pixel phone, you can use a third-party launcher to hide the app function, or put apps that you don't need to see others in the app drawer. Hide apps are similar to deleting apps, just click the "Remove" button. Note that this will only remove the icon from the home screen and the app can still be found through the app drawer or search bar.

FaceTime on Android:

At present, the Android system cannot use FaceTime directly. Although Apple introduced last year the feature that allows other operating system users to join FaceTime calls through their browsers, this does not mean that Android users can initiate FaceTime calls or download the FaceTime app. You can use alternative apps such as Google Duo, Zoom, Skype, Messenger, or WhatsApp to make video calls with friends.
