How to train your Facebook News Feed to give you the info you want

Facebook constantly adjusts its information flow algorithms so you can see what the company believes is important to you. However, it is currently undergoing a more significant shift: In the future, posts from businesses, brands and media will appear less frequently, while interactions from family and friends will be promoted more.

This strategy of reducing breaking news and increasing family updates can't be better if you like to follow your family and friends through social media. But what if you also want to see the latest news from the media and favorite public homepages? You can retrain your information flow to show more posts of this kind. The method is as follows:

Set your priority

The first step is that you need to decide which people and pages are most interested in you. Since posts don't appear in your stream in chronological order, setting these priorities will determine which updates you see first.

Login to Facebook website first. Then click the three dots next to the Information Flow link and select Edit Preferences. Finally, click Preferred to whom to select the contacts you want Facebook to display at the top of your stream. To prioritize media sources and other pages, click the drop-down menu at the top and select Page , which will display a list of organizations you are following.

Since you can't prioritize the pages you haven't followed, you should also add some new sources. When you are on the same settings page, scroll down and click to find a page that matches your interests. This will display a list of public pages (not profiles) that you may want to connect to. If you see anything you are interested in, click the relevant "Like" button and Facebook will integrate that source into your information flow. You can also find specific news media by entering a name in the search box at the top of the page. Click on the media's homepage, select Follow , and then select Preferred to display to promote it in your stream.

You can also edit your priorities on the mobile app, and Facebook will apply these changes to your website view. To access these options on an Android application, click the menu button (three horizontal lines in the upper right corner) and click

Flow Preferences . On iOS, click the menu button (three horizontal lines in the lower right corner), select Set , and then click Flow Preferences .

Consider your page

Who and what are you actually following? You may have not viewed a public page you like for a while, and doing so will help you remove past interests and focus on your current interests.

To relive this memory, please visit the Facebook website and click the

page link on the left side of the page. Select Liked page , scroll down to to view the Liked page title, and then click to start .

Here, you can cancel out liked pages or discover new pages, such as pages of your local news. To find them, check out the banner at the top of the page and click Hot Recommendations or Local Featured.

View posts anytime

Adjusting your information flow should be an ongoing process: When you scroll down your information flow aimlessly, you can adjust what you see in real time.

Suppose you come across a post you don't like: Click on the small down arrow in the upper right corner (in the iOS app, the button looks like three dots instead of arrows), and select Hide posts. When you hide the update, Facebook's algorithm will start showing you fewer stories from the person or page. So selecting this option can help you ignore anything you don't care about or want to see at all.

Other options

After you complete these steps, the new Facebook should know exactly what you want to see in your stream—at least until the company decides to adjust its algorithm again. Any time you want to adjust your view again, you can check out our complete guide on custom information flows. However, for the time being, the basic operations we outline will tell the current algorithm that you want to see news updates from your favorite websites and sources, as well as posts from your personal contacts.

In fact, if you want to bypass your friends and family completely, you can view the post streams of public pages you follow (but this only appears on Facebook sites, not on the app). Access the stream by clicking the

page information flow link on the left side of the page. In this view, you can't customize the order in which posts are displayed, but you can still view news updates without paying attention to any personal messy information.
