This article has been updated since its original publication on July 25, 2017.
Never miss a breaking news story again! This guide shows you how to leverage your smartphone's built-in and third-party apps to stay updated on current events. Customize your settings to receive alerts on the topics most relevant to you.
Android: Google News
Android phones often include the Google app, or you can download it for free (also available on iOS). This app uses your search history and location to personalize your news feed, delivering relevant stories and breaking news alerts.
On Pixel phones, access the Google feed by swiping right from your home screen. Otherwise, open the Google app. Customize your feed by indicating your preferences: tap the three-dot menu (bottom right) on any story and select "I'm not interested in this" to remove unwanted content or topics. Use the heart button to see more similar news. Manage your interests in Settings > Channels & interests > Following.
To manage notifications, go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications you opted into. Enable alerts for specific topics by tapping the bell icon next to search results.
iOS: Apple News
iOS users have Apple News. While a paid Apple News subscription offers additional content, the free version is sufficient for breaking news.
Open the app and tap "Following" to personalize your feed. Add channels and topics using the plus icon, or search for specific topics.
Customize alerts in the Following tab: scroll to "Manage" > "Notifications & Email" to enable or disable alerts from specific news sources.
Apple News also offers a widget for your Today View screen. Add it by swiping right from your home screen, tapping "Edit," and then the plus icon. Select the News widget and tap "Add Widget."
Third-Party News Apps
While Google and Apple News provide comprehensive coverage, several third-party apps enhance your news experience.
Twitter: Excellent for breaking news. Follow news sources, check trends, and configure push notifications (Notifications tab > cog icon > Push notifications > News). The Explore tab shows global and local trends. Twitter is free for Android and iOS.
Flipboard: Creates a personalized digital magazine based on your interests. Use the heart icon to like stories, the share icon to save articles, and the plus icon to pin content. Flipboard is free for Android and iOS.
Individual News Site Apps: Many news organizations have their own apps with push notifications and other features.
By combining these methods, you'll stay informed and never miss important breaking news.
