How to report incidents on your trip in Google Maps or Apple Maps

Feb 25, 2025 am 04:19 AM

Both Google Maps and Apple Maps are designed to help you get from point A to point B efficiently and safely, and for this purpose they use crowdsourcing data to identify any factors that may hinder the itinerary, such as road construction, accidents, lane closures, hazards objects and speed measurement points.

We know that these apps are smart enough to solve some problems on their own, such as traffic jams, as all users slow down at the same location. However, it also relies on the driver to report road conditions to fully understand the road conditions.

You can also participate in these community reports and do your best to let other users know about the issues on the road – these apps don’t rely on just one person’s statement, but if enough reports about something match, then it It will be reflected in the map display when you navigate.

You must be in Google Maps navigation mode to report events. Click on the icon on the right that looks like a speech bubble with a plus sign: This will bring up the report option. You can also enter the same screen by swiping up the estimated trip time (below the map) to display the "Add Report" option.

These options may vary slightly by region, but you will usually see such as "accident", "mobile speed camera", "congestion", "road construction", "lane closure", "breakdown vehicles" and " Options like roadblocks”. There are no other settings options, but if you change your mind, the Undo button will be displayed briefly before reporting the record.

You can also use voice to report, which is a safer option if you are driving. Just say “Hey, Google” and say the report you are going to do—like “There was an accident here.” As long as your wording clearly expresses what you want to report, Google Assistant will understand what you mean.

If you are using Android Auto, at the time of writing, you cannot report events by tapping the screen or using Google Assistant, so you must use your phone. This seems like a weird omission from Google, but you will still see events and dangers reported by other users on the car dashboard.

In Apple Maps on iPhone, you don't need to be in navigation mode to report events (for example, if you're just passing by): click on your account image (next to the search box), then click "Report", "Report new issues" ” and “report incidents.” If you are in navigation mode, click on the route details below the map and click "Report Events".

The three options are "Accident", "Hazard" or "Speed Test", although they may vary by country. In navigation mode, your report will be registered immediately at your current location, but if you are not using navigation mode, you can choose to specify a location on the map. You can also add some short written details, or even add photos to supplement the report. Click the account picture on the main map screen and click Reports to view the reports you recorded earlier.

All of this can be managed through Siri, which is also a safer option if you are following the road. Your wording doesn't matter, as long as you clearly express the point - for example, "Hey Siri, report an accident" or "Hey Siri, there's something on the road" are acceptable. If you use Siri, the report will be registered immediately.

If you are using Apple Maps with CarPlay, then you can use Siri as described above. If you can use the screen safely, you can also click the small blue icon on the left (showing the exclamation mark inside the rectangular voice bubble) to find the report options when you are not navigating. If navigation mode is enabled, click on the route expected arrival time box to find the same reporting option.
