You can finally connect Bluetooth headphones to your Nintendo Switch. Here’s how.

The Nintendo Switch has achieved great success with its outstanding performance, but that doesn't mean that this handheld is perfect. Switch users have long complained about their compatibility issues with wireless audio.

The good news is that Nintendo heard the voices of players and added Bluetooth to the Switch, which means you can finally connect to wireless headphones! This feature works on Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite, and any Bluetooth headset or earbuds should work properly, allowing players to play games privately while on the go, freeing from the constraints of cables.

To enable this feature, your Nintendo Switch requires the 13.0.0 (or higher) system software installed. To check the version, select the gear icon from the home screen, and select System and System Update to see if your system is the latest version, or if you need to download and install the updated version.

Connect Bluetooth headset

Before connecting the Bluetooth headset, you need to set the headset to pairing mode so that it can be discovered. The specific operation method depends on your headset model. If you have any questions, please refer to the online instructions or user manual.

For example, for Apple AirPods Pro, place the headset into the charging case, open the lid, and hold the button on the back of the case until the white light at the front starts flashing. The earbuds will remain in pairing mode until you close the lid again.

After the headset enters pairing mode, select the gear icon from the Nintendo Switch home screen, and select "Bluetooth Audio" and "Add Device" (or "Pairing Device", which some users report seeing). When the headphones you want to connect to appear on the screen, select them and confirm the connection.

If you use the top button to adjust the Switch volume, you will notice that the volume of the connected headphones will also change accordingly. To permanently delete Bluetooth headsets, return to the Bluetooth Audio menu in System Settings, and select the headset and select Remove Device. If you want to reconnect them, you will need to re-pair the pairing process.

Limitations and Issues

Nintendo says there are some restrictions on using Bluetooth audio. For example, when you connect a Bluetooth headset, you can only pair up to two controllers with the Switch instead of the usual eight. Also, if your Bluetooth headset has a built-in microphone, the microphone won't work.

Switch also prompts you via a screen message "You may experience delays depending on the Bluetooth device you are using." This is not uncommon for Bluetooth audio devices, but it is still worth noting. Hopefully, with subsequent software updates rolling out, the delay issues will improve and affect fewer devices.

Another limitation is that you can only pair your Switch with one audio device at a time, although the host can remember 10 devices and switch between them quickly. You should also note that when doing "local communication" (for example, starting local wireless multiplayer), Bluetooth audio will be disconnected.

We have seen some reports on issues with this new feature, such as slow wake-up times and audio quality differences between different Bluetooth headsets. If you are in a similar situation, try removing all paired devices, press and hold the top button to power off the Switch, and restart after 30 seconds.

Remember, this is a brand new feature, so if one pair of headphones doesn't connect properly, you may be able to get better results with another pair.
