How to Check if Your iPhone Was Refurbished

Learn from where your iPhone is: brand new or renovated?

After buying a used iPhone, you may be curious about its history. Was it sold from Apple as a brand new device, or was it a refurbished machine? This article will teach you how to easily identify the official sales status of Apple and how to determine whether it has been renovated by third parties.

Find your iPhone model

Open the "Settings" app and enter "General" and then enter "General"> "About this machine". You will see important information about your iPhone, including device name, software version and model.

How to Check if Your iPhone Was Refurbished

Models will reveal the source of the iPhone:

  • Model starts with M: means a brand new device purchased from Apple.
  • Model starts with F: means refurbished equipment by Apple or an authorized operator.
  • Model starts with P: means a customized iPhone with lettering.
  • Model starts with N: Indicates the replacement device of a failed iPhone provided by Apple.

If your phone is a refurbished phone, you don't need to worry. Apple's certified refurbished products go through a strict process to make them look brand new. This process includes thorough cleaning of the equipment, replacing damaged parts if necessary, and replacing the battery and housing.

Apple certified refurbished products usually look and run like brand new iPhones, but due to legal reasons, Apple cannot sell them as brand new products. Apple usually offers these refurbished products at a larger discount, so they can be very cost-effective.

Carriers such as AT&T and Verizon have also renovated and sold iPhones at discounted prices. Unlike Apple, they may not replace the battery or offer a one-year warranty. You can check the warranty status of your iPhone by visiting Apple's warranty website and entering the device serial number.

Third-party renovation equipment

Even if the iPhone model indicates that Apple sells it as a brand new device, it may have been renovated by a third party afterwards. Few third-party manufacturers have the same strict renovation standards as Apple, so it is best to avoid third-party renovation devices when buying a second-hand iPhone.

It is difficult to tell whether the iPhone has been renovated by a third party because the model cannot be changed. However, you can learn about the history of your phone by:

  • Check the packaging: If the phone is in the official Apple box and is not marked "refurbished" anywhere, it is unlikely that it will be refurbished later.
  • Check Part History: If the phone is running iOS 15.2 or later, you can view the list of replaced parts by going to "Settings" > "General" > "About this unit" .
  • Bring your phone to the Apple store: Make an appointment with Apple Genius, who may be able to evaluate the screen quality or internal parts of the phone to determine if it has been unofficially repaired or renovated.

None of the above methods can be completely sure whether the iPhone has been renovated by third parties, but they provide more information about device history and quality.

While knowing the official source of iPhones will not have much impact on its features—it depends more on how previous users use it—it is always helpful to learn more, and this little trick will do make it happen.
