Fast Ruby on Rails Frontend Using Tailwind as a Classless CSS Frameworks
This article is very similar to the previous articles in this series, but this time we will use the Tailwind framework as a classless CSS framework.
Create a new Rails application
-
rails serve
Thetime
before the command is used to display the total time of command execution. The following example took 47 seconds.
<code>$ rails -v Rails 8.0.0 $ time rails new classless-css-tailwind ... real 0m47.500s user 0m33.052s sys 0m4.249s</code>
Rails 8 uses Propshaft as the resource pipeline library and Importmap as the JavaScript library by default based on its "No Build" philosophy. Importmap does not perform any JavaScript processing.
Open the project using VSCode or your favorite editor
<code>$ rails -v Rails 8.0.0 $ time rails new classless-css-tailwind ... real 0m47.500s user 0m33.052s sys 0m4.249s</code>
Understanding Rails default layout app/views/layouts/application.html.erb
Expand…
- Following the convention over configuration (CoC) principle, Rails uses `application.html.erb` as the default layout to render all pages; - The original file content in Rails 8 should be the same or similar to:<code>$ cd classless-css-tailwind && code .</code>
-
The
-
<head>
tag contains important structural elements for page rendering and proper functioning.<head>
Used to contain metadata and important resources that help configure the page's behavior (using JavaScript), appearance (using CSS), association with other systems and services, and security settings such as CSRF and CSP protection;
The main content of the - page will be rendered within the
<body>
via the ERB tag. This tag serves as an integration point for containing view content dynamically rendered by Rails;
Generate a test page using the pages
controller and the html_test_1
, html_test_2
, html_test_3
and html_test_4
actions
Expand…
```bash $ rails g controller pages html_test_1 html_test_2 html_test_3 html_test_4 create app/controllers/pages_controller.rb route get "pages/html_test_1" get "pages/html_test_2" get "pages/html_test_3" get "pages/html_test_4" invokeerb create app/views/pages create app/views/pages/html_test_1.html.erb create app/views/pages/html_test_2.html.erb create app/views/pages/html_test_3.html.erb create app/views/pages/html_test_4.html.erb invoke helper create app/helpers/pages_helper.rb ```- Since routes are also added when creating controllers and actions, any created actions can be accessed via the following link:
localhost:3000/pages/html_test_1
localhost:3000/pages/html_test_2
localhost:3000/pages/html_test_3
localhost:3000/pages/html_test_4
Use VSCode to open the config/routes.rb
file
- Add the following lines at the end of the file to direct the page root to the
pages
controller andhtml_test_1
action created earlier. This way, when accessing your website or system, the first page displayed will be thepages
controller'shtml_test_1
page. Otherwise, Rails' default page will be displayed.
<title></title><meta content="width=device-width,initial-scale=1" name="viewport"></meta><meta content="yes" name="apple-mobile-web-app-capable"></meta><meta content="yes" name="mobile-web-app-capable"></meta><link href="/icon.png" rel="icon" type="image/png"></link><link href="/icon.svg" rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml"></link><link href="/icon.png" rel="apple-touch-icon"></link>
- If the
--skip-routes
parameter is passed when creating the controller, you can ignore adding routes for the created action.The complete command will becomerails g controller pages html_test_1 html_test_2 html_test_3 html_test_4 --skip-routes
Show Rails routes
Expand…
Using the terminal, you can specify a controller (using `-c`) to display the route, for example the `pages` controller:<code>$ rails -v Rails 8.0.0 $ time rails new classless-css-tailwind ... real 0m47.500s user 0m33.052s sys 0m4.249s</code>
Alternatively, you can use the following command to display all routes:
<code>$ cd classless-css-tailwind && code .</code>
- You can also access the route through your browser using the address
http://127.0.0.1:3000/rails/info/routes
. Don't forget to start the development server usingbin/dev
or standardrails server
in the project root. The development server "listens" for changes to JavaScript files and CSS files to perform the necessary processing to serve them to the user. - In order for changes to these files to be immediately executed and viewed in the browser, a gem like Rails Live Reload needs to be installed.
We will create four pages with HTML content to test CSS styles.
Ruby on Rails uses the MVC (Model-View-Controller) architecture by default to initiate project organization. Most of the code is organized in the following folders:
- Code related to domain/business logic and data should be kept in the
app/models
folder; - Display related code (HTML, JSON, XML, etc.) will be located in the
app/views
folder; - Code related to the request lifecycle will be located in the
app/controllers
folder;
Insert the content of the html_test_1
page
