How the new concepts of JSSugar and JSre able to slow down websites

Jan 04, 2025 pm 07:45 PM

Hello everyone! Today, I would like to share my thoughts on the topic of the much talked about JS0 and JSSugar. In my opinion, there is a certain danger in this, which is hidden potentially for billions of website users. Now I will try to explain what I mean.

You may not like my point of view, please, there are comments on dev.to, I will try to answer everything.

Description of JS0 concept and JSSugar in my understanding

Perhaps I misunderstood something or made a mistake somewhere, but I will explain as best I can.

In short, today in javascript instead of expanding the functionality with more and more functions we need to focus on making it more acceptable for the user. Like, today all developers write code that goes through typescript, webpack and a bunch of other layers, so why not apply this logic of simplification, when the developer writes less code, in future versions of ecmascript. Like, set such a vision as a standard, that we need to create functions (forEach for example) just like lodash or jQuery, and not expand, because it is already complicated.

Like, there is JS0, it will be for this environment where everything is compiled, and let ordinary developers use forEach instead of for, conditionally.

So, now here is where the serious problem with this approach arises. It seems to be written that "not for the sake of speed", but in fact, everyone who has ever compared the speed of JavaScript code in benchmarks understands what I'm getting at.

Slow implementation for micro-optimization of code quantity

Yes, now it's time to move on to practice:

Code #1

const a = [1,2,3,4,5]
a.forEach((e)=>{
  if(e === 4){
    console.log(e)
  }
})
Copy after login

Code #2

const a = [1,2,3,4,5]
for (let index = 0; index < a.length; index++) {
  const e = a[index];
  if(e === 4){
    console.log(e)
  }
}
Copy after login

Result:

How the new concepts of JSSugar and JSre able to slow down websites

Let's now take another example:

Code #1

const a = [1,2,3,4,5];
const b =  a.map((e)=>{
  return e + 1;
})
Copy after login

Code #2

const a = [1,2,3,4,5]
const b = [];
for (let index = 0; index < a.length; index++) {
  const e = a[index];
  b.push(e + 1)
}
Copy after login

Result:

Results are based on data from the site https://jsbenchmark.com.

So, what I'm getting at is, if we imagine that from TC39 (Technical Committee) and the developer community in general, the main vector of suggesting ideas will move in such a direction, when we create lodash and jQuery functions, and this will become a standard in ECMAScript, then there will be functions like forEach, which do not change the speed, but in fact slow down the application. This is, of course, worth thinking about.

Here, even in the official slide (the bird flew away) it is shown where the vector should shift and this is true, convenience for users.

And it is convenient for users to use a fast site, and not lagging slop, but for developers "more expressive".

Therefore, I would like it if when this suddenly becomes a standard, such functions were not at the forefront. SOLID, DRY and other principles already slow down modern applications, and now they are making it a standard.

Impact of js-framework-benchmark

This article was inspired, of course, by my experience working with the js-framework-benchmark repository, which, in my opinion, very clearly shows why speed is important today. In fact, people want websites to load faster - that's a fact. Today, most modern popular frameworks and libraries are slow in fact. It may even seem to someone that speed is crap, but it is not. If you put everything together, then with such "optimizations" web applications will work several times worse. Therefore, I think that something like this.

Conclusion

It's cool that ideas like these are coming out today. They move JavaScript and all web programming forward, but there are objective things like speed that shouldn't be written off either.

Demystifying JavaScript: What It Does and Why It Matters Demystifying JavaScript: What It Does and Why It Matters Apr 09, 2025 am 12:07 AM

JavaScript is the cornerstone of modern web development, and its main functions include event-driven programming, dynamic content generation and asynchronous programming. 1) Event-driven programming allows web pages to change dynamically according to user operations. 2) Dynamic content generation allows page content to be adjusted according to conditions. 3) Asynchronous programming ensures that the user interface is not blocked. JavaScript is widely used in web interaction, single-page application and server-side development, greatly improving the flexibility of user experience and cross-platform development.

The Evolution of JavaScript: Current Trends and Future Prospects The Evolution of JavaScript: Current Trends and Future Prospects Apr 10, 2025 am 09:33 AM

The latest trends in JavaScript include the rise of TypeScript, the popularity of modern frameworks and libraries, and the application of WebAssembly. Future prospects cover more powerful type systems, the development of server-side JavaScript, the expansion of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the potential of IoT and edge computing.

JavaScript Engines: Comparing Implementations JavaScript Engines: Comparing Implementations Apr 13, 2025 am 12:05 AM

Different JavaScript engines have different effects when parsing and executing JavaScript code, because the implementation principles and optimization strategies of each engine differ. 1. Lexical analysis: convert source code into lexical unit. 2. Grammar analysis: Generate an abstract syntax tree. 3. Optimization and compilation: Generate machine code through the JIT compiler. 4. Execute: Run the machine code. V8 engine optimizes through instant compilation and hidden class, SpiderMonkey uses a type inference system, resulting in different performance performance on the same code.

JavaScript: Exploring the Versatility of a Web Language JavaScript: Exploring the Versatility of a Web Language Apr 11, 2025 am 12:01 AM

JavaScript is the core language of modern web development and is widely used for its diversity and flexibility. 1) Front-end development: build dynamic web pages and single-page applications through DOM operations and modern frameworks (such as React, Vue.js, Angular). 2) Server-side development: Node.js uses a non-blocking I/O model to handle high concurrency and real-time applications. 3) Mobile and desktop application development: cross-platform development is realized through ReactNative and Electron to improve development efficiency.

Python vs. JavaScript: The Learning Curve and Ease of Use Python vs. JavaScript: The Learning Curve and Ease of Use Apr 16, 2025 am 12:12 AM

Python is more suitable for beginners, with a smooth learning curve and concise syntax; JavaScript is suitable for front-end development, with a steep learning curve and flexible syntax. 1. Python syntax is intuitive and suitable for data science and back-end development. 2. JavaScript is flexible and widely used in front-end and server-side programming.

The shift from C/C to JavaScript requires adapting to dynamic typing, garbage collection and asynchronous programming. 1) C/C is a statically typed language that requires manual memory management, while JavaScript is dynamically typed and garbage collection is automatically processed. 2) C/C needs to be compiled into machine code, while JavaScript is an interpreted language. 3) JavaScript introduces concepts such as closures, prototype chains and Promise, which enhances flexibility and asynchronous programming capabilities.
