Why Doesn't My CSS3 Animation Work in Safari?

CSS3 animations not working in Safari

You are encountering some issues with animations that use CSS3 in all browsers that support CSS3 It runs perfectly on all devices except Safari. Your animation code is as follows:

HTML

<div class="right">
    <div class="key-arm"><img src="images/landing/key-arm.png" alt="arm" /></div>
</div>
Copy after login

CSS

.landing .board .right {
    /* ... other styles ... */
}
.landing .board .right .key-arm {
    /* ... other styles ... */
}

/*=== Key Arm Animation ===*/
@-webkit-keyframes keyarm {
    0% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
    5% { -webkit-transform: rotate(-14deg); }
    10% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
}

@-moz-keyframes keyarm {
    /* ... other keyframes ... */
}

@-ms-keyframes keyarm {
    /* ... other keyframes ... */
}

@-o-keyframes keyarm {
    /* ... other keyframes ... */
}

@keyframes keyarm{
    /* ... other keyframes ... */
}

.right .key-arm{
    /* ... other styles ... */
    -webkit-animation: keyarm 8s ease-in-out 0s infinite;
    -moz-animation: keyarm 8s ease-in-out 4s infinite;
    -ms-animation: keyarm 8s ease-in-out 4s infinite;
    -o-animation: keyarm 8s ease-in-out 4s infinite;
    animation: keyarm 8s ease-in-out 0s infinite;
}
Copy after login

As you mentioned, this Doesn't work in Safari, nothing happens in the animation. Also, also only in Safari, the "key-arm" div only shows up when you resize the screen! It exists in the DOM, but for some reason it doesn't show up!

What did you do wrong?

Answer

The problem is with @keyframes. In Safari 4, @keyframes are not supported. This is weird because on the same page you can use @keyframes to create a valid animation!

Animation code that supports @keyframes:

CSS

.board .rays{
    /* ... other styles ... */
}

.board .bottle{
    /* ... other styles ... */
}

/*=== Rays Animation ===*/
@-webkit-keyframes rays{
    0% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
    100% { -webkit-transform: rotate(360deg); }
}
@-moz-keyframes rays{
    /* ... other keyframes ... */
}

.board .rays{
   -webkit-animation: rays 40s linear 0s infinite;
   -moz-animation: rays 40s linear 0s infinite;
   animation: rays 40s linear 0s infinite;
}
Copy after login

HTML

<div class="board">
    <div class="rays"></div>
    <div class="bottle"></div>
</div>
Copy after login

If you are on Safari 4 Try it in a medium (e.g. in jsFiddle) and you'll find that the animation doesn't work.

Solution

Found the solution. When using keyframes in Safari you need to use full percentages:

This won't work:

@-webkit-keyframes keyarm {
    0% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
    5% { -webkit-transform: rotate(-14deg); }
    10% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
}
Copy after login

This one will:

@-webkit-keyframes keyarm {
    0% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
    5% { -webkit-transform: rotate(-14deg); }
    10% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
    100% { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); }
}
Copy after login

Not sure why , but that's how Safari works!
