Why Doesn't My 200% Height Grid Item Fill the Parent Container?

Grid Element Height Calculation

Question:

In a CSS grid layout, a grid item's height is set to 200%, but it doesn't expand to fit the parent container's height. Instead, it remains the height of its child element. Why is this occurring?

Answer:

The height calculation for grid elements is determined by their position within the grid structure. A grid item's parent is not the container, but rather the track it resides in.

In this case, the container height is fixed at 100px, but the row height is set to 1fr, which is a flexible length unit. As a result, the percentage height (200%) of the grid item is relative to the track height, allowing the item to expand the track vertically.

Solution:

To ensure the grid item expands to fill the container's height, the row height must also be fixed. By setting the row height to the same value as the container height (e.g., grid-template-rows: 100px), the percentage height of the grid item will correctly calculate based on the container's height.

.gridContainer {
  grid-template-rows: 100px; /* Adjustment; previously set to 1fr */
}
Copy after login

With this adjustment, the grid item will now occupy the full height of the container, and any overflowing content will be hidden by the scroll bar.
