A rare coin minted to celebrate the release of one of Oasis' past albums may not be worth much in your wallet, but it's significantly more valuable if you sell it.
The iconic band made headlines this week after ticket prices for some legs of their reunion tour surged by up to 100% due to 'dynamic pricing'. Fans were left disappointed and angry and the news prompted backlash from the music industry.
However, if you were the lucky owner of a specific piece of Oasis history, you would have had enough cash to cover your gig expenses. A £2 coin, released in 2000 to mark the launch of the Gallagher brothers' fourth studio album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, is worth more than some of the cheaper concert tickets' initial cost.
Coin enthusiasts will be aware that the phrase 'standing on the shoulders of giants' is etched around the edge of every standard £2 coin. Unlike the Oasis record, in this case, the word 'shoulders' is plural. It comes from one of Isaac Newton's most well-known quotes taken from a 1675 letter to Robert Hooke, reading: "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
Noel Gallagher, now 57, once revealed he was inspired when he saw this quote on the currency when he spotted it at the pub. He jotted it down on a cigarette packet, accidentally missing out an 'S'. The absent letter didn't stop the album from becoming a hit, however, as it soared straight to number one in February 2000 – selling a massive 300,000 copies in the first week alone.
The coin is hard to come by, with only 200 ever minted. It can be spotted because it features a silhouette of the band members at the time – Noel, his brother Liam, Andy Bell, Gem Archer, and Alan White. The reverse side features the band's logo and the year 2000.
This collector's dream doesn't often come up for sale, but one has recently surfaced on eBay in the US, with a price tag of $360 (around £274). EIL, an online store for collectible records that has sold the coin before, describes it as: "Super rare 2000 UK promotional-only '£2 coin' with bronze centre stamped 'OASIS 2000' on one side and a group silhouette on the other, and the album title engraved into the silver perimeter surround - housed inside its original circular protective display case, this example even retains the original zip-loc style clear outer bag! Only 200 examples of this unusual collectable were minted."
One user, who's already lucky enough to hold such a rarity, boasted: "My band, Bliss 66 was signed to Epic in 2000... I definitely (not maybe) have one of these." Another enthused collector revealed: "The Oasis £2 coin. Always wanted it and found one few years back."
