Qualcomm unveils two new 8-core Snapdragon X Plus CPUs

Qualcomm has officially announced two new Snapdragon X Plus SKUs for affordable PCs called the X1P-46-100 (4.0 GHz single-core boost clock, 3.4 GHz multi-core boost) and X1P-42-100 (3.4 GHz single-core boost, 3.2 GHz multi-core boost). Both come with an 8-core CPU (2 fewer cores compared to the X1P-64-100 and X1P-66-100) and the same Hexagon NPU (45 TOPS) found on all Snapdragon X Plus models.

Qualcomm compares the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-46-100 with last-gen offerings from Intel (Core Ultra 5 125U) and AMD (Ryzen 5 8640U). The company claims it can deliver up to 79% faster single-core and 40% multi-core performance than Intel and AMD between the 10 Watt and 20 Watt mark. Of course, the story is remarkably different at higher wattages, as shown by the Snapdragon X Elite, which failed to keep up with Intel and AMD's heavy hitters with no power limits.

Next up, Qualcomm says the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-46-100's GPU is between 65-100% faster than the Radeon 760M and Intel's 4 CU Iris Xe iGPU found on the above processors. In terms of teraflops, the X1P-46-100 maxes out at 2.1 and the X1P-42-100 at 1.9, both of which are much slower than the 3.8 TFLOPS model found on the 10-core X1P-66-100.

One of the main advertised benefits of the Windows-on-Arm platform has been battery life. As an 8-core CPU with a relatively less demanding GPU, the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-46-100 supposedly offers anywhere between 36% to 100% improved battery life compared to Intel's Meteor Lake laptops. The situation will obviously be different with Lunar Lake, which Intel claims can power your laptop for up to two days. AMD's Strix Point, on the other hand, might lose out as it is far more power hungry compared to Qualcomm and Intel.

Other notable Snapdragon X Plus X1P-46-100 and X1P-44-100 specs include support for up to three USB 4.0 ports, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, Bluetooth LE, up to 64 GB of 16-bit, 8-channel LPDDR5X-8488 memory and the ability to power three 4K 60 Hz displays (two with HDR enabled). OEMs can optionally use Qualcomm's X65 5G modem to add cellular connectivity.
