Deal | HP Envy 2-in-1 laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS, Radeon 780M gets $400 discount
HP's Envy line-up has historically struck a good balance between the premium build quality and performance of the Spectre line-up and the practicality and value proposition of the Pavilion family. That holds even more true for the HP Envy x360 16 2-in-1 that is currently on sale at Best Buy with a substantial $400, or 36%, discount. After the discount, the Envy x360 is down to just $699.99, making it a viable option for students looking for a lightweight productivity machine that can do some light gaming on the side.
The 16-inch HP Envy x360 in question packs an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS CPU paired with 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400 RAM, giving the convertible laptop some impressive performance, given its 18.3 mm thick chassis. The RAM and CPU combo is backed up by a 1 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD.
In our review of the HP Envy x360 (albeit a slightly different variant with a different display), we found the 2-in-1 to have consistent CPU performance, although it was somewhat hamstrung by a low TDP and AMD's decision to devote valuable silicon to a new NPU for AI acceleration.
The HP Envy x360 runs on the same Radeon 780M iGPU as the venerable Asus ROG Ally (curr. $499.99 at Best Buy) and Lenovo Legion Go (curr. 679.99 from Lenovo US), meaning it's more than capable of gaming at its display's 1920 × 1200 resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate. Fortunately, the IPS display in use here does have AMD FreeSync to smooth out low frame rates and eliminate tearing when needed.
It's worth noting, however, that the 16-inch IPS display on the HP Envy X360 isn't particularly bright or colour accurate, with HP claiming a mere 300 nit maximum brightness and 62.5% coverage of the sRGB colour space. To be clear, the HP Envy X360's brightness and colour accuracy are both perfectly acceptable for general use and gaming, but an external monitor would be advised for any colour-critical work, like photo editing.
Fortunately, connecting the HP Envy X360 16 to an external display is easy, thanks to an abundance of ports. On the left side of the convertible, there are two USB 3.1 Gen2 type-C ports, an HDMI port, and a USB 3.1 Gen2 type-A port, while the right edge packs another USB 3.1 Gen2 type-A port. Both USB type-C ports are also capable of DisplayPort output.
Being a 2-in-1, the HP Envy x360's display supports both 10-point multitouch and pen input via an MPP 2.0 stylus, like the HP MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen (curr. $69.88 on Amazon)or the Microsoft Surface Slim Pen 2 (curr. $144.99 on Amazon). Meanwhile, the 360-degree hinges make digital art and note-taking convenient with tablet mode.
Check out the HP Envy X360 16 for $699.99 at Best Buy while the 36% discount is active.
