Seek Thermal releases Nano 200 and Nano 300 thermal imaging cameras - handy for spotting cooling problems in overclocked PCs
Seek Thermal has released the improved Nano 200 and Nano 300 thermal imaging cameras for Android and iOS phones. The infrared cameras see heat and help PC modders detect cooling and heating problems quickly when overclocking CPUs and GPUs.
A traditional non-contact thermometer only measures temperature at the spot it is pointed at, so to detect cooling problems on a large device, such as a big GPU cooler, users are forced to tediously scan back and forth. Thermal cameras work like digital cameras except the sensors are sensitive to infrared light and can see in the dark.
The Nano 200 and Nano 300 have a 25 Hz image refresh rate due to improved sensors. This is a significant improvement over the prior generation with a 9 Hz refresh rate that was released almost a decade ago. New optics with SV1 Image Optimization result in more detailed images and videos. Seven false color modes have been optimized for distinguishing temperature differences. Multi-spot temperature mode simultaneously displays the lowest, highest, and center-spot temperature in an image.
The Nano 200 and 300 measure 1 x 1 x 0.86 inch (25 x 25 x 22 mm) and weigh 0.45 ounce (13 g). The sensors measure temperatures within -4° F to 626° F (-20° C to 330° C) with an accuracy of +/- 9° F (+/- 5° C) or 5%, whichever is greater. The camera lenses are infinity-focused for sharp images of most targets, and an optional macro adapter enables measurements of small parts such as a RAM module.
Unlike some competing cameras, the Nanos do not use internal batteries that eventually fail, but are powered by connected smartphones. The Nano 200 has a sensor resolution of 200 x 150 pixels with a 35° x 27° field-of-view while the Nano 300 has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels with a 57° x 42° field-of-view.
The Nano 200 has a $149 MSRP, and the Nano 300 has a $249 MSRP (both available here on Amazon). Readers who want to share thermal images of their friends, pets, or modded PCs IRL can pick up a portable Fujifilm Instax photo printer (available here on Amazon).
