Woolworths Olympic coins: Shoppers left fuming after $2 coins end up on eBay for hundreds of dollars
Bags of Woolworths $2 Olympic coins are selling for hundreds of dollars online. Some supermarket customers have expressed dissatisfaction with the situation.
Bags of Woolworths $2 Olympic coins are being flogged for hundreds of dollars online, leaving some supermarket customers frustrated after being unable to secure the coins themselves.
Four $2 coins have been released by Woolworths and the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams heading to Paris. Customers making purchases with cash in-store are able to collect the coins, with a new one being rolled out every two weeks.
But bags of the coins have now been advertised for huge mark-ups on eBay and Facebook Marketplace, with some sellers asking for up to $200 for the bags of coins.
A Woolworths spokeswoman told Yahoo Finance they were aware of the listings.
“We’re aware and are looking into this. We do not encourage the resale of these items, and it is clearly unacceptable and does not match our or the community’s expectations,” a spokeswoman said.
One Woolworths shopper in Mandurah was left fuming after seeing the listings.
“When are you going to do something about bags of Olympic coins being sold?” she asked in an email. “That's why so many of us have been told they’re out.
“Do better.”
Another customer said she was left frustrated after being unable to secure any of the coins herself, despite trying.
“My local stores have bags in the checkout but will not open them. This is ridiculous,” she said.
“They aren’t ‘allowed’ to chose (sic) which coins I receive, and they can’t open a bag of them if there are other coins in the till.”
