Ronin Network Sees Surge in Activity as Sky Mavis Prepares to Launch zkEVM for Web3 Gaming

Web3 game company Sky Mavis, known for the popular play-to-earn (P2E) title Axie Infinity, is once again in the limelight following a recent surge in daily activity on its EVM-compatible network, Ronin.

As part of its next move, the company is allowing developers to build on a permissionless infrastructure with advanced zkEVM technology on the Ronin network. Previously, Sky Mavis co-Founder Jeff Zirlin highlighted Ronin’s cautious approach toward onboarding new projects, stating that “curated is better at the beginning of an adoption cycle.”

Announced in early June, the Ronin zkEVM will serve as the foundation for building scalable Web3 games, the company stated at the time.

The Ronin zkEVM is a zero-knowledge (ZK) Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) layer-2 (L2) built with a Sky Mavis-modified version of the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK). Notably, developers on Ronin will be able to create their own zkEVM L2s, further enhancing the scalability and efficiency of the Ronin network—transforming it into a potential hub for Web3 games.

In a statement shared with CryptoBriefing, Zirlin said:

“The launch of the Ronin zkEVM is a major milestone in our mission to onboard 1 billion users into Web3. Together with the community, we are building the next generation of Web3 games and dApps on a scalable, secure, and performant network.”

Altogether, the Ronin Network appears to be expanding. According to data from its blockchain explorer, several key metrics have increased: total transactions stand at 845M, up 12.74% from 750M in June; total addresses are up 14% to 24M, and total blocks are at 37M.

The zkEVM Hype Cycle

To put it simply, zkEVMs are a specific type of zk-rollup—a developing technology that strives to maintain compatibility with EVM while still using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). This allows interaction with Ethereum-based smart contracts and decentralised applications while using ZK rollups to scale the Ethereum network.
