System76 tips Fedora Cosmic spin for 2025 release with Fedora 42
System76 has made waves recently with its Cosmic desktop environment, which is slated to launch with the next major alpha build of Pop!_OS on August 8. However, a recent post on X by System76 CEO, Carl Richell, has tipped that the Cosmic DE developer is also working on an official Fedora spin running Cosmic DE.
The post confirming the existence of an official Fedora Cosmic spin is in reply to a question on a separate post by a Linux user showing off Cosmic running on Fedora. In his response to the question about an official Fedora spin, Richell seemed to imply that a Fedora spin with Cosmic DE would likely land with Fedora 42, although a Fedora 41 launch is possible.
"Yes. We may miss the Fedora 41 window so hopefully Fedora 42."
This news is significant for Linux users who prefer Fedora to Ubuntu, which is the traditional base for System76's Pop!_OS. Even when System76 moves away from its Gnome-based desktop experience for Pop!_OS with the launch of Pop!_OS 24.04, it will still be based on Ubuntu.
While Pop!_OS doesn't operate on exactly the same release cycle as vanilla Ubuntu, generally providing a more up-to-date experience than Ubuntu, Fedora is known for balancing stability and support for bleeding-edge hardware and software. This more up-to-date software, among a host of other factors, like SELinux support, makes Fedora a preferred Linux distribution for security-conscious individuals and Linux enthusiasts.
According to the official Fedora release schedule, Fedora 41 is planned for October 2024, while Fedora 42 is currently planned for April 2025.
