From a minting blunder to coins being released into circulation early, there are a number of reasons why your 50p piece might fetch more than expected.

TikTok connoisseur, @CoinCollectingWizard, shares his knowledge with his 155,200 followers on the platform, and now he's prompting Brits to give their wallets a once-over.

In a recent clip, he shares: "The 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p is usually just worth face value unless you have a rare rotation error version.

"The error version of the coin has the Queen's head printed facing the wrong direction.

"When a coin is flipped over, the Queen's head should be facing to the left but on a rotation error coin, this would be different.

"Around £30 you can get for this rare coin."

But the enthusiast doesn't stop there.

He highlights another potentially lucrative find with the Athletics 50p coin that was minted at an earlier date than most.

He clarifies: "Around 2.2million of the Athletics 50p coin was minted and released into circulation in 2011.

"But this earlier version was minted in 2009 and is more valuable to collectors.

"If you have this coin dated 2009, then you have found it.

"And can sell for £250 plus."

Wrapping up his trove of tips, he touches on the sought-after error coin from the 2011 Aquatics 50p series, part of the London 2012 Olympics collection.

He advises: "If you find one with the swimming lines over the face, it could be worth a small fortune.

"A small handful of this original design entered circulation, but it was then adapted quickly to show the face above the water.

"With so few of the real design out there, it's meant the coin's value has been pushed up significantly to £2,000."

After sharing his insightful information, the video attracted hundreds of likes and shares.
