A crypto protocol code used by multiple web3 applications and services was compromised by hackers on Thursday, according to crypto software and hardware wallet maker Ledger.
The company announced the hack on Thursday morning, and it’s unclear how many people were affected by the breach. However, ZachXBT, a well-known independent crypto researcher, wrote on Twitter that one victim had more than $600,000 in crypto drained from their account.
Ledger, which is headquartered in Paris, France, provides a hardware wallet for storing cryptocurrencies and NFTs, and it also offers an SDK for developers to integrate with its technology.
The company said in a statement that it “detected a code compromise in one of the crypto protocols used by several services and applications.”
“We are currently investigating the situation and working closely with the affected services to contain the impact of the breach,” the statement added.
According to ZachXBT, the code compromise affected a protocol used by multiple services, including Edge, Unstoppable Domains, Trezor and MetaMask.
The researcher added that the attackers were able to drain crypto funds from at least one Trezor user, and they also attempted to steal funds from a MetaMask user, but the victim’s large transaction fee saved them from being hacked.
Edge, Unstoppable Domains, Trezor and MetaMask did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
