


Microsoft unveils a $3.3 billion AI infrastructure investment plan to expand data center capacity in the United States
Microsoft will launch a four-part investment strategy by the end of 2026. The tech company will build a data center campus and plans to upskill more than 10 million people across the state in GenAI by 2030.
AWS, Google, and Microsoft are developing comprehensive infrastructure plans to support growing demand for computing power and investing in states across the United States.
Earlier this year, AWS announced a $210 million investment in data centers in Indonesia and Mississippi. This is the largest capital investment in either state. Google said last month it planned to invest $3 billion to build and expand data center campuses in Virginia and Indiana.
The construction and upgrade of hyperscale data centers is expected to nearly triple cloud computing and storage capacity over the next six years, according to a report released by Synergy Research Group in October. High-intensity GenAI workloads are part of the driving force behind the expansion.
Oracle pledged $10 billion in March to build data capabilities in the United States over the next year.
As technology providers upgrade their data center plans, talent is part of the puzzle.
Over the next five years, more than 1,000 students are expected to train in Wisconsin data centers while creating other IT industry jobs in the region. Many technology companies combine investment promotion with upskilling and certification opportunities for local talent and students.
The effort could also benefit nearby businesses.
Finding skilled talent to support cloud and AI goals can be challenging. AI job openings accounted for more than one-tenth of all tech job openings in April, according to a CompTIA review of the U.S. labor system.

As part of Microsoft’s investment in Wisconsin, the company will partner to build a 250-megawatt solar power project expected to begin operations in 2027. Microsoft said the power generated by the new power plant will enable Microsoft to use the equivalent of electricity needed by more than 3 million homes.
