How to avoid car sickness when using your iPhone
Motion sickness can make any road trip miserable. If you're prone to it, you likely avoid reading in the car, whether it's a physical book or an e-reader. But sometimes checking your iPhone is unavoidable, like when you need directions. iOS 18 introduces Vehicle Motion Cues, a feature designed to alleviate motion sickness. Setup is quick, and we'll guide you through it. (Note: A similar feature for Android is not yet available, though it's rumored to be in development).
Understanding Vehicle Motion Cues
Motion sickness arises from a sensory mismatch: your body feels stationary, but your eyes see movement. This conflict creates nausea. It’s not limited to cars; it can occur on boats, planes, or even with VR headsets. The visual input contradicts the body's sense of position.
Apple explains, "Research shows motion sickness is often caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and feels. Vehicle Motion Cues use animated dots on the screen's edges to represent vehicle motion, reducing this conflict without obscuring content."
Focusing on a phone screen exacerbates the problem. Vehicle Motion Cues address this by displaying small, moving black dots that reflect the car's acceleration, braking, and turning. This visual cue helps your brain reconcile the sensory discrepancy.
Enabling and Using Vehicle Motion Cues
Vehicle Motion Cues can activate automatically when your iPhone detects you're driving, or you can manually control it. In iOS Settings, go to Accessibility > Motion, and select Show Vehicle Motion Cues.
You have three options: Off, Automatic, and On. When enabled, a message and dots appear on the screen.
For quicker access, add the Vehicle Motion Cues shortcut to Control Center. Swipe down from the top right, tap the button, then add the control (it's under Vision Accessibility and looks like a car with dots). The shortcut offers the same three options: Automatically in Vehicle, On, or Off. Currently, sensitivity adjustments aren't available; you'll have to test to see if it works for you. (You can test it while stationary, but the effect won't be the same).
