Ethereum Foundation Launches 'Mekong Testnet' as a Pre-Devcon Treat to Explore Pectra Upgrade Enhancements

The Ethereum Foundation deployed the “Mekong testnet” on Nov. 7, providing a temporary testing ground for the upcoming Pectra upgrade.

This testnet allows developers and stakers to explore upcoming enhancements to the Ethereum network, including updates to user experience (UX), staking, deposits, and exit mechanisms.

Mekong is fully equipped with all the major Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) slated for the Pectra release, offering a comprehensive preview of the changes, according to the Ethereum Foundation.

“Mekong is designed to be a playground for wallet developers to try out the UX changes and for stakers to get used to the upcoming changes,” the foundation stated.

The foundation noted that the Mekong testnet is a short-lived testnet to enable sufficient testing ahead of the Pectra upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet.

This environment allows developers to gain early experience with the network modifications, ensuring they are familiar with the updates before broader deployment.

Tim Beiko, the foundation’s protocol support lead, highlighted the temporary testnet as a special preview ahead of the upcoming Devcon event in Bangkok. The name “Mekong” pays homage to the Mekong River, which traverses several Southeast Asian nations, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

As a pre-devcon treat, @ethPandaOps just launched a short-lived Pectra testnet: Mekong ?️

You can use it to try out EIP-7702, MaxEB consolidations, and more ?

Mekong testnet key features

The Mekong testnet includes several key EIPs for Pectra, each focusing on different aspects of the Ethereum ecosystem. While EIP-7702 introduces adjustments to the user experience, EIP-7251, EIP-6110, and EIP-7002 cover changes to staking functions, such as deposits and withdrawals.

Developers and stakers are invited to test these features and share their feedback, with the Ethereum Foundation highlighting the value of community input in fine-tuning these updates.

To access the Mekong testnet, users can visit the network’s dedicated landing page. From there, they can add Mekong to their browser wallet, use the faucet to request funds, connect to a JSON RPC endpoint, and view block explorers.

Additionally, advanced users may choose to run a node on the Mekong testnet, which requires both an Execution and Consensus layer node.

The Mekong testnet will serve as the first platform to experiment with updates to the staking workflow in Pectra, particularly changes to the processes for depositing and withdrawing.

Pectra fork overview

The Pectra upgrade combines “Prague” updates for execution layer changes with “Electra” for consensus layer adjustments.

Key features of Pectra include adjusting the maximum effective balance, advancing account abstraction, and introducing Execution Layer-triggered exits.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, Pectra integrates critical changes and additional EIPs, boosting functionality across multiple layers of the ETH network.

The Ethereum Foundation also confirmed that Mekong does not affect other testnets like Holesky or Sepolia. However, insights from Mekong will help steer Pectra’s implementation throughout the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem.
